The Queens of Homecoming — 100 Years of Aggie Stories

The Queens of Homecoming

The Tradition of Miss A&T

Homecoming isn't only about football.

Some of its most enduring traditions developed away from the field.

One is the tradition of Miss A&T.

According to A&T archival research, the Miss A&T tradition was established around 1930, shortly after women were readmitted to pursue bachelor's degrees. Hattie Diffay Jones is identified as the earliest known woman to hold the title, serving in 1931–32.

Alda Marian Newsome, Miss A&T for 1933–34, subsequently received significant publicity in the Black press.

By the end of the decade, Miss A&T was being presented as the Queen of Homecoming.

What began generations ago continues today through the university's coronation tradition.

For the 2026 centennial celebration, the Coronation of Mister and Miss A&T opens the official student Homecoming schedule on Sunday, Oct. 25.

It's another reminder that Homecoming's history isn't one story.

It's hundreds of traditions woven together across generations.
